Free Taster Class!

SUNDAYS: 11:30AM to 12:30/1PM

Family Classes are for students ages 8+ including adults. Students under 8 by invitation only.

The class is suitable for beginners and intermediate belt levels, but Red Belts and Black Belts are welcome to join in as well.

Known as the Family Class, the class is a great opportunity for children and parents to learn a new skill together. However, the class is a good mix of children and adults who train without a family member. We welcome anyone who wishes to learn a martial arts in a fun, friendly and safe environment. Do not be fooled by the name of the class - this class provides a tough workout for children and adults a like.

The class aims to provide students with a solid introduction and foundation in Taekwon-do, where technique is heavily emphasised to ensure proper execution and delivery.

The syllabus includes drills, pad work, patterns, pre-defined step sparring, free sparring, board breaking and self-defense. Classes incorporate cardio-exercises during warm up plus core strengthening, balance and flexibility. Agility and speed work also plays a big part in our general workout in order to deliver fast kicks.

Also unique to Forest Hill Taekwon-do is weapons training, specifically bo staff. Bo staff work is not compulsory and is a small part of the syllabus. However, all students have the opportunity to learn basic drills using the bo staff, as well as learning the patterns with bo staff.

Students are encouraged to learn at their own pace to perfect their techniques. The focus is for students to feel confident in themselves before moving up the grade levels.

Aspects of Taekwon-do are harder for some but easier for others, so students are encouraged to work with each other and help develop each other's skills. The trust and safety in our training partner is key to providing the safe environment to train.

TIGER TOTS: AGES 5 TO 8

Free Taster Class!

SUNDAYS: 11AM to 11:30AM

Tiger Tots is a basic martial arts class designed to introduce young children ages 4-7 to Taekwon-do.

The focus of the class is to teach children to follow basic instructions, perform basic blocking, kicking and punching techniques, as well as to teach them that exercise can be fun and rewarding.

Learning a martial art can provide several benefits even at such a young age:

  • Developing Listening Skills

  • Learning to Follow Instructions

  • Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem

  • Encouraging Fitness and Physical Activity

  • Fostering Team Work and Social Skills

  • Enhancing Concentration, Memorisation and Retention Skills

  • Learning to Set and Achieve Goals

  • Increasing Coordination and Motor Skills

  • Improving Balance and Posture

  • Heightening Mutual and Self-Respect

  • Instilling Discipline and Etiquette

  • …to name a few!

Like most martial arts, Taekwon-do follows a rigid syllabus whereby students are expected to practice and perfect a technique before grading and moving on to a new belt level. Most young children are unable to physically perform the rigorous exercises and techniques required to pass the adult syllabus and, unfortunately, there is no formal junior level syllabus.

As such, Forest Hill Taekwon-do has developed an assessment programme designed specifically with Tiger Tots in mind. The assessment programme advances the children through most of the junior/adult white belt syllabus (about 80%) in bite size chunks, where only the exercise patterns have been omitted. Tiger Tots have mini-gradings for each technique covered and earn badges to show their achievement.
